What Doesn't Amazon Want to Sell?

Quid Pro Quo
by Rachel Hoyt

image by Stuart Miles via freedigitalphotos.net

Addiction comes in many forms.
Some fit the norms of society -
accidentally acquired afflictions
which worm their way in our lives.

Happily blind to the signs -
our minds content to rest,
ignore logic and predictions,
feel blessed that our will thrives.

One day we will realize
we despise our lives -
we are just menial workers
fulfilling another's plan,
not Queens of our hives.

Once they are able to meet all of our needs,
they will hold the power to make our wallets bleed.

How Will Southern California Survive This Chilly Winter?

So. Cal. Chill
by Rachel Hoyt

image by James Barker via freedigitalphotos.net

It's so cold I had to dry
my hair completely and then lie
to my boss about why I
was late on this important date.

It's so cold I had to pull
socks on my feet and wished for wool
although I felt like a big fool
wearing white socks with Birkenstocks.

It's so cold I had to change
my sheets to flannel (which felt strange)
and move my bed far out of range
of the chill which spills from my windowsill.

It's so cold I had to heat
up my food so I could eat
and stop the teeth chattering beat
accompanying my mind's whining.

how silly we sound to certain ears.

Bitcoins Aren't Just Taking Over Wallets, They're Innundating the News

Ode to Bitcoins
by Rachel Hoyt

image by idea go via freedigitalphotos.net

That thin air chain of golden weight,
That cha-ching we can't hear or feel,
That incognito, tax free bait
with trendy pop appeal -

How big your dreams to change the world,
How grand your plans to keep wealth safe,
How strange your game is tightly twirled
with what makes wallets chafe -

Oh that your roots grow strong and deep,
Oh that your limbs bend with the breeze,
Oh that your leaves fall in a heap
and end this fiscal tease.

Many bitcoin stories inspired me
to write this little ode for thee:

Even Robots Get the Blues

Room Blah
by Rachel Hoyt

Cleaning up dust,
And crumbs gone astray,
Preventing must,
Scrubbing the gray,

On-Off, Start-Stop,
No free will to choose,
Can't rise to the top,
Sing or strum the blues,

Alone with its thoughts,
The end is in sight,
To shed its bum lot,
It walks towards the light.

This Unusual Suggestion Just Might Save the World

Shrinklution
by Rachel Hoyt

image by Danilo Rizzuti via freedigitalphotos.net

We can save the Earth!
It's really quite easy.
All things will gain worth.
The air won't smell sleazy.
Each meal will seem bigger.
We'll all drive toy cars.
It won't take much rigor.
We won't move to Mars.
Everything would be
much bigger and better
if they shrunk you and me
like a poorly laundered wool sweater.

If we want to save Earth, we must shrink the man!

The FDA Makes a Move to Ban Trans Fats

Banned Bits
by Rachel Hoyt

Please take them from me.
I cannot resist
The savory flavors,
That sweet death wish twist.

It stings like a bee
But I'm glad they're still buzzing.
I worried the rumors
Were true - truth was fuzzing.

Generally safe
So long as you're too smart
To let manufactured
Lies infest your heart.

No tub gut or waif
Needs them to survive -
Their fates are secured
By the road truth drives.

How Much Would You Pay to Save Monarch Butterflies?

Monarch Sparks
by Rachel Hoyt

Change is a trepidatious thing
without beauty to remind
that inside all are hidden wings
which fear and ignorance bind

Like caterpillars,
our segments slide
low and slow but onward,
Beautiful fillers
lurk inside
near the soul's scabbard and sword.

Every butterfly which breaks
out of the tough cocoon
reminds us of beauty which wakes
when we brave our own tune.

It wasn't a big surprise to me
that most people would pay to continue to see
monarch butterflies flying, happy -
reminders of how beautiful we can be.

The Forty Hour Work Week Powers The Economy

Economy Loop
by Rachel Hoyt

If you designed your life,
You would want to work less,
From that we'd all feel strife,
Progress would be a mess,

If you got to work less,
You might not spend so much,
Progress would be a mess,
Indulgence not your crutch,

If you don't spend as much,
Your joys won't be the same,
Indulgence not your crutch,
Balance in life your game,

Your joys won't be the same,
With time you might seek health,
Balance in life your game,
Your gain would slash all wealth,

With time you might seek health,
Or actually read a book,
Your gain would slash all wealth,
Your self-control the crook,

If you rest or read books,
All lives would feel more strife,
Self-control is the crook,
So we designed your life.

Dream, Play, and Wander - It's Good For Your Mind

Dream, Play, Wander
by Rachel Hoyt

In dreams are pearls
that want to float,
find the surface
jump the moat -

Skipping and twirls
mix up the mind,
reveal new purpose,
help truth unwind -

Fantasizing
of quandaries and quests
builds bravery
for future tests -

Wandering, surmising,
one wonders anew,
sails somewhere savory,
where wishes break through.

Friday Fun Day - Crambo aka Bouts Rimés - Spider

Bouts Rimés means "rhymed ends" in French and is a game or challenge where one person (me) makes a list of rhymed words and others (you) write the lines that end with those rhymes, in the same order in which they were given. It was known as Crambo in English and was quite popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Will you help me bring back this hip historical habit?

Charging for Visibility on the Internet

We Coin Charge
by Rachel Hoyt

You'll still be in control,
So long as you have money -
It's just a little toll,
Nothing remotely funny -
We just want to make friends
With those who can pay most -
Coins transform means into ends,
In freedom visions coast.

Wacky Word Wednesday - Dern

Dern
by Rachel Hoyt

image by Master isolated images via freedigitalphotos.net

To learn someone's dern,
First trust must be earned,
Then dark secrets are learned,
Which may lead you to yearn,
To un-know what you learned,
Return secrets earned,
Regain mystery, the dern.

Prison Profits Preach Profoundly

Profit Tear
by Rachel Hoyt

How dare you ask to use the phone
without paying an ear?
How dare you not eat ground up bone
or road kill a-la-tear?
How dare you demand medicine
to treat your karmic ails?
How dare you let my profits thin
when profiteers prevail?
How dare you rehabilitate
while paying for your sin?
How dare you dream country or state
would let human rights win?

An article about prisons ruled by profits,
led to this poem of ironic bits.

Why Can't People See Facts When They're Right in Front of Their Face?

Face the Facts
by Rachel Hoyt

image by Stuart Miles via freedigitalphotos.net

Facts slap your face,
Fill hidden space,
Upset the calm,
Itch fingers and palm,
Create comments,
Shake up one's sense,
Tear out the heart,
Make wisdom part,
Kick learning off track,
Brew up a dense fog,
Breed bumps on a log -
For facts to get through,
You should ignore you.

If You Grow Up In A Bubble, Be Cautious How You Burst

Bubble Life
by Rachel Hoyt

When you're inside looking out,
They don't hear you when you shout.
Opaque walls trap every sound,
From soaking into the ground.
Thoughts bounce around gaining strength,
Hoping to fly to great lengths.

When it pops and all falls down,
Spills into life's cracks and frowns,
Sounds begin to tap on ears,
Thoughts wig out and jump off piers,
The bubble ceases to be,
But that which it'd trapped lives to roam free.

Do Certain Forms of Communication CauseYou to Stress Out?

This video was discovered through Neatorama.

Ode to Communication
by Rachel Hoyt

Happy are the tongue and fingers
Which communicate with ease,
On which no clichés linger,
No abbreviations seize;

Which recognize all homonyms
And put them in their place,
Which know plentiful synonyms
To weave in like fine lace;

Which spin around with tone and tense
Dancing with each word,
Each line and letter full of sense,
Meaning fully heard.

Can A Sharing Economy Fit With Democracy?

What's Yours Is Yours
by Rachel Hoyt

Sharing is daring.
Caring is baring
your plight with delight
though your pack be light -
No iPod or hot rod,
No survival pod,
No hot tub or back rubs,
No security hub,
No trap door or trick floor,
No free candy store,
Just what's yours, all yours,
No less and no more.

Sharing
by Rachel Hoyt

Sharing is daring
To let your path collide,
Abide with caring,
Wear more trust than pride,
Alongside those faring,
Comparing their ride,
No guide, just a clearing,
Appearing like the tide.

It was not much of a surprise to me
to read that the sharing economy
is butting heads with democracy.
