Friday Fun Day - Crambo aka Bouts Rimés - Funny Bunny

I think I'll stick with this new game a while.  I've got lots of regular photos and rhymes but few abstract photos and riddles (and I haven't heard any complaints about the switch).  Bouts Rimés means "rhymed ends" in French and is a game or challenge where one person (me) makes a list of rhymed words and others (you) write the lines that end with those rhymes, in the same order in which they were given. It was known as Crambo in English and was quite popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.  Will you help me bring back this hip historical habit?

A little white bunny I met once upon a time.  He says, if you want to use his picture, that would be fine.

Combo Crambo (A new twist...): Use the first word in the rhyme pair anywhere within the line and the second at the end of the line.

Funny bunny
Handy candy
Rotten cotton
Eat sweet
Sass grass
Hopping stopping

Thursday Thoughts - Freedom is Never Free

Smell the Ruses
by Rachel Hoyt

image by Stuart Miles via freedigitalphotos.net

Yes sir, you are here,
The Land of the Free,
Feel free to do as you please.
We never spank rears,
Or say, "No, Honey."
We accept your soul's inner sleaze.
At each of the stores,
On the town's main drag,
You can buy all that you need:
Rights not to do chores,
To publicly nag,
Or forgo thought when you feed.
It just costs a bit,
To be a glutton,
And we don't take excuses.
Stand up tall, don't spit,
You missed a button -
Now go and smell the ruses.

I never thought that freedom was free,
but I've seen more proof in the news lately:
CVS fining folks who won't share their health stats
and stores who charge browsers because they think they're brats.

Wacky Word Wednesday - Megrim

Megrim
by Rachel Hoyt

When one feels megrim,
They aren't quite grim,
But their smile is spread thin,
They've no joy to the brim,
They're half-full, light blue - megrim.

Crambo Winner Announcement - Brian Miller

The winner of last Friday's Crambo game is Brian Miller, poet of Waystation One and one of the gracious hosts at dVerse Poets Pub.  He somehow seems to crank out an amazing poem every day, leave thoughtful comments on countless numbers of blog posts, help run an amazing poet community, and be a devoted husband and father.  Oh, and did I mention he works a day job to pay the bills?  I am honored to have him as a regular reader and am delighted he is joining the games on Fridays to infuse his wonderful free verse with my requested rhymes.  His contribution last week captured my heart as it painted that picture in my mind of asking my fairy godmother (or my hero) about the secrets to life:

do Tell, Quaintrelle
what makes your world Swell,
stacks the Brick(s)building castles & kingdoms
(save my money from Psychic Network)

what's your Trick
to un-
load a Ton

teach me your Jargon
so i can

Run

You can visit Brian here to read more of his poetry or at dVerse Poets Pub for a 'drink at the bar'.  Thank you for playing Crambo everyone!  I hope you'll come back Friday and tell your friends about the fun.

Crambo Winner Announcement

Last week's Crambo games brought four fantastic entries.  I had a really hard time choosing a winner, but have chosen Jeffrey Scott.  Jeff writes more than just poetry on his blog.  He shares humorous rants about life, photos, and even throws in an occasional music critique or short story.  He has been a very enthusiastic reader and poetic game participant for several months now on Rhyme Me a Smile.  I do hope you will visit his blog and leave a comment to help brighten his day the way he does mine.

I chose Jeffrey's poem as the winner because I could see myself imagining such a story while staring at my cat, Sammy (Samantha).  I've been reading a lot of fairy tales lately and these lines took my mind to a world where a clowder mined ore like the seven dwarfs did when Snow White happened upon them:

Silently formed a kitty clowder,
till suddenly they became much louder.

Rache the cat - don't mess with her.
Lo! She calls the clan for armour.

Equipped with weapons - even more.
That's why they mine the precious ore.

In her mind, such a fanatic.
But just a cat - so no such antic.
Kibble inspired dreams are ick!

Thank you for playing Crambo everyone!  I hope you'll come back and tell your friends about the fun.

Thursday Thoughts - Recycling TVs and Other Technology

Terry Tout and the Garbage Spout
by Rachel Hoyt

Terry Tubert Timothy Tout
Learned young to take his garbage out.
He knew how to pick pieces off,
How to spew prices as he coughed,
The men to sluff the best parts to,
And what they'd cost if there were few.
He kept his piles from piling up.
He bought fine whiskey for his cup.
He watched the piles go in and out.
Terry Tubert Timothy Tout
Got rich off a garbage spout -
But then the spout would not turn off
And the fumes made his workers cough,
No people prized the parts he picked,
Profits vanished as trash grew thick.
So Terry Tout fled the scene too,
Mad from watching as trash piles grew,
Afraid tech trash will chase him down -
It took his job, why not his town?

and the effects of tech trends changing with haste.

Nags more than a campaigning hippy,
Might also be described as lippy,

Thursday Thoughts - On Writing for Free

A Mouth Full of Cents
by Rachel Hoyt

The writer's war is fought with words,
Fraught with nerds who gulp then purge,
The slime they urge us to swallow,
The hollow nourishment -
Not a cent, just oxygen,
A pretty den, a play place
For my face to be seen.
How keen. I might matter,
If I scatter myself freely,
Poignantly place words in the world,
Unfurl my soul where all can see.

No one is buying vowels
Or consonants these days.
I've seen embroidered towels
Receive more sincere praise.

Alms for the poor are spread thin,
Beginning to tread heavily,
Steadily on hearts who trust,
The lust for profits won't kill
The will of the true writer -
Fighter with words for nerds.
The herds are hungry, starving,
Carving their way through the crop,
Won't stop until the cream,
Their steam cloud growing,
Snowing cents and sense.

This rhyme is in honor of those who already worked their way up,
yet still get asked to work for free like this young pup.

Crambo Winner Announcement

The first Crambo game on Rhyme Me a Smile took place last Friday.  I was very appreciative of the enthusiasm shown by multiple players, but especially by the winner: M. James of Slow Wit Poet.  He uses rhyme beautifully in the witty verse on his blog and cranked out these giggle worthy lines last week:

Follow the rules or you'll be in trouble
It's clear that pop doesn't come before bubble

The reason to your rhyme makes me wonder
but I wouldn't call it any kind of blunder

I know too, how it goes, once the lines pop
the rhymes begin to flow and it just don't stop

The irony here is that M. James broke the rules himself in previous entries.  (Read them here.)  I didn't plan on requiring strict adherence to them to win, but I learned while reading this week's entertaining responses and trying to chose, that one who can adhere to the historic rules and pack a wallop of wit will win my heart every time.  Congratulations M. James!

Wacky Word Wednesday - Balter

I love to balter -
One rarely can falter,
It takes no smooth vaulter,
You just tear off your halter,
And dance wildly, balter.

Thursday Thoughts - Leasing vs Sharing

image by Stuart Miles via freedigitalphotos.net

Leasing
by Rachel Hoyt

Leasing is greasing
The tracks to possession,
Suggestion that ceasing
To own is perfection.
Intention: pleasing,
Freezing introspection,
Possessions tainting,
Slashing wise intentions.

Sharing
by Rachel Hoyt

Sharing is daring
To let your path collide,
Abide with caring,
Wear more trust than pride,
Alongside those faring,
Comparing their ride,
No guide, just a clearing,
Appearing like the tide.

This week's rhymes were inspired by a company leasing jeans
and business owners sharing space to operate within their means.

Are most certainly not moribund,
Nor will they leave you stunned,
They're full and rich - orotund.

Friday Photo Fun - Something Relaxing

Something Relaxing
by Rachel Hoyt

A place for relaxation,
Where some reach full elation,
Take their minds on vacation,
Seek elongation,
And inner exploration.

Friday Photo Fun is when I share a randomly captured moment,
or perhaps a photo experiment with more purposeful intent,
then pair it with a rhyming riddle to exercise your mind
and teach you more weird facts to which you once were blind.
After the answer is guessed, I will post a second, non-abstract photo...
and just in case you wanted to know,
the first is not a photoshopped version of the second -
they're shot using different techniques that to me beckon.

So what is this thing that brings relaxation?
I await your guesses with anticipation.

UPDATE:

Bryan White has solved the riddle for today.
A yoga mat is a relaxinig place to play.
