Friday Fun Day - Crambo aka Bouts Rimés - Reflection

Bouts Rimés means "rhymed ends" in French and is a game or challenge where one person (me) makes a list of rhymed words and others (you) write the lines that end with those rhymes, in the same order in which they were given. It was known as Crambo in English and was quite popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Will you help me bring back this hip historical habit?

Are California's High Speed Trains Just a Dream?

Dream Train
by Rachel Hoyt

We chug along, dreaming our dreams -
at least to some they're dreams it seems -
Dreams of not driving everywhere,
Dreams of a reasonable fare,
Dreams of a route from A to B
that's environmentally friendly,
Dreams of flight speeds without the height,
Dreams with not a single red light,
Dreams of feeling connected to
these pathways which can lead us through
to places we find and build dreams,
where dreams are life's supportive beams.

They say the high speed train is not a cause which should succeed.
I say it is a dream which oil kings wish to squash with greed.

A California Walnut Farm That Emulates Sustainability

Sustainability
by Rachel Hoyt

Sustainability
Understands what we need,
Supports the greater we,
Tames impatience and greed,
Asks the sun to shine free,
Invites the wind to blow,
Nurtures our trash with glee,
Annexes water's flow,
Believes in harmony,
Impedes daft destruction,
Looks for what should, could be,
Inspires waste reduction,
Tries to think like a seed,
Yearns for Earth to be freed.

This news about a California walnut farm inspired me
to write an acrostic poem about sustainability.

Wacky Word Wednesday - Sook

Sook
by Rachel Hoyt

image by Stuart Miles via freedigitalphotos.net

I would not want to be a sook,
finding adventure in movies and books,
determined to stay in one nook -
a cowardly person, a sook.

Why Gmail Users Can't Expect Privacy

Text Traffic
by Rachel Hoyt

image by Stuart Miles via freedigitalphotos.net

The processor processes
The texts which one tosses
Into webs to whip them,
Ship them through thin air
Where privacy is rare.

The sticky web sticks to
Secrets and stats like glue
Hiding them far away
To stay as a memory
For all who wish to see.

The programming's programmed.
Privacy be damned.
The text once typed flies free.
Some see so photographic,
Remember text traffic.

I understand intellectually
why Gmail knows quite a bit about me,
but must they preach for zero privacy?

Wacky Word Wednesday - Meed

Meed
by Rachel Hoyt

One needs a meed
to heed the lead
to one who feeds
on the toil of steeds -
Dollars for deeds.
A wage is a meed.

A Poem Pondering Off-Shore Fracking

Sinking Feeling
by Rachel Hoyt

I've got a sinking feeling
that we're sinking our own ship.
Although some hands are reeling,
on the sails they have no grip.

Pirates plunder the shallows
digging for buried treasure,
hoping the sea won't swallow
them and their sordid pleasures.

Nearby on sailboats, speed boats,
and yachts we sail along blind,
hoping that innocence floats
and ignorance calms the mind.

Deep down below bubbles hope,
a vital resource and glue
which bursts when prodded or groped,
dropping all it held onto.

I stand on land protected
by valiant hands dense with love,
gazing at seas injected
by greedy forces from above.

My ship is anchored, for now,
if yours sinks will mine follow?
Will the sea warn me somehow,
before it starts to swallow?

After reading of a sink hole that is slowly swallowing a town,
I was glad to know that nearby fracking was mostly shut down.
If only the ocean nearby was ruled by those whom it could drown...

Wacky Word Wednesday - Galley-west

Galley-west
by Rachel Hoyt

Something described as galley-west
is in a state less than its best -
chaos, confusion, dazing unrest.
This stunned state can be called galley-west.

If Cascarones Could Talk, What Would They Say?

image by Simon Howden via freedigitalphotos.net

Dearest cascarone cousin,

It's almost my time to crack.
The streets gleefully buzzing.
I'm waiting with my pack.
I was scared to die so soon
until I watched the others
with whom I'd bunked since June
burst into all their colors.
The joy the people show
when crushing us on friends
is such a beautiful glow -
it proves our lives must end.
Or souls yearn to be free
to scatter amongst the crowd.
Our afterlives as confetti
are when we make our species proud.
I hope to get crushed on a hairdo
that was fixed with lots of hairspray.
In fact, if I see someone who
looks good, I may jump today.
I hope you'll leave the shelf behind
someday and join the show.

From Fiesta with peace of mind,

From China to Italy and Spain,
cascarones have brought joy again and again.
