What Does Trash Say to Mother Earth Each Day?

Trash Talk
by Rachel Hoyt

Our remnants talk back.
They smack and nag,
flaunting their right to still be:

"You're not my mother,"
says the old bag
floating deep down in the sea.

"I'm no man's brother,"
shouts the sharp frag
flying through space furiously.

"I'm no one's lover,"
grunts the worn tag
fuming within Mt. Debris.

This poem was inspired by the many piles of trash on Earth -
in the ocean, on the land, and in space  - spoiling her worth.

Poetry Prompt - Crambo aka Bouts Rimés

In honor of National Poetry Writing Month, I'm bringing back a Friday tradition.  Bouts Rimés means "rhymed ends" in French and is a game or challenge where one person (me) makes a list of rhymed words and others (you) write the lines that end with those rhymes, in the same order in which they were given. It was known as Crambo in English and was quite popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Will you help me bring back this hip historical habit?

Music Medium Funky With a Side of Spicy Sauce

Flavorful Tune
by Rachel Hoyt

image by renjith krishnan via freedigitalphotos.net

I like my music mezzo funky
spiced like beef stew - meaty, chunky,
with dashes of garlic, pepper, and onion,
popping out like mysterious grunion.

My feet retreat to restful corners
when beats blend or break at the poles of order,
Yet if the stew simmers mezzo spice
I taste and dance without thinking twice.

for casting a dance trance on you and me.

UPS Saves Millions Per Year By Avoiding Left Turns

Right Wrong Turn
by Rachel Hoyt

If you missed that left turn,
There's no need to stop stern,
Blocking and locking up traffic -
Life will move more slick
If you go straight, then right,
And right at the next two lights...
Assuming you must go that way,
Don't find joy while astray...
For sometimes on the long way we learn,
Good can come from making wrong turns.

Could this truth extrapolate to life lessons one learns?

Reasoning and Higher Cognition Lead to Concern for Justice

Cognition Corner
by Rachel Hoyt

image by idea go via freedigitalphotos.net

High above the beat of love
which tells the feet to dance,

Atop the spine that can't unwind
unless stuck in a trance,

Near the ears which strain to hear
proof of justice in life,

Behind the eyes where wisdom spies
at karmic joy and strife,

There is a place where thoughts find space
to thicken into guilt,

Where reason calls selfishness treason
and concern for justice is built.

A new study shows that justice's ignition
is sparked by reason and higher cognition.
